Saranda
Albania's southern seaside town, with a UNESCO ancient city down the road and Corfu across the water.
Saranda is the busy southern hub of the Albanian Riviera, a horseshoe of apartment blocks climbing the hills around a bay that looks straight across the strait to Corfu. Its palm-lined seafront promenade fills every summer evening, and it is the natural base for Butrint, the UNESCO-listed ancient city in the lagoons to the south, and for the Blue Eye spring inland. The white-sand coves of Ksamil sit a short ride down the coast.

When to avoid Saranda
No month grades as a washout, but November to February is the wettest, coolest stretch, when many seafront places close and ferries to Corfu run less often. August is the opposite problem: hot, loud and packed, with the beaches toward Ksamil at their most crowded. The sea is chilly for swimming until around June.

A little history of Saranda
The bay was the site of Onchesmos, a port of ancient Epirus that later served Roman and Byzantine traders. Its modern name comes from the Byzantine Monastery of the Forty Saints on the ridge above. Butrint, just south, is far older: a Greek city that Virgil tied to exiles from Troy, then a Roman colony, a Byzantine bishopric and a Venetian outpost guarding Corfu.
Under the Ottomans, Suleiman the Magnificent built Lekuresi Castle over the bay. Italy occupied Albania in 1939 and briefly renamed the town Porto Edda. Under communism this was a sealed border zone facing Corfu. Since the 1990s ferries and tourism have transformed it, and the hills have filled with hotels and apartments.

FAQs about Saranda
▸ When is the best time to visit Saranda?
March to September is the good-weather window. May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm, with the sea swimmable from about June and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and at peak busyness. Winter is quieter and wetter, and many beach businesses close.
▸ Should I stay in Saranda or Ksamil?
Saranda has more restaurants, the ferry, buses and evening life; Ksamil has better beaches right outside the door and is closer to Butrint. Many people stay in Saranda and visit Ksamil for the day.
▸ Are Saranda's beaches any good?
The town beaches are small, pebbly and crowded in summer. The better swimming is south toward Ksamil and the coves along the Butrint road, or north along the Riviera.
▸ Can I visit Corfu from Saranda?
Yes. Ferries cross the strait to Corfu Town, easily done as a day trip in summer. Carry your passport, as you are entering the Schengen area, and check sailing times, which thin out in winter.
▸ Is Saranda expensive?
Generally no. Food, rooms and transport are cheap compared with Corfu across the water, though August pushes prices up noticeably, especially for sea-view rooms.
▸ Do I need a car in Saranda?
Not for the town, Ksamil or Butrint, which buses cover. A car helps for the Blue Eye, Gjirokaster and the beaches north toward Himare, where public transport is sparse.
