Oran

Algeria's most outgoing city: Spanish forts above the bay and the birthplace of rai.

Oran is Algeria's second city, a big Mediterranean port under the Murdjadjo mountain, where the Spanish Santa Cruz fort looks down on a bay lined with French-era boulevards. Three centuries of Spanish rule, an Ottoman beylik and 130 years of French Algeria left a layered old town, and the city gave the world rai music and the setting of Camus's The Plague. Few foreign tourists come, which is much of the appeal: a lively, outward-looking city that still feels entirely itself.

When to avoid Oran

There is no bad season for the weather. Summer is when the city fills: domestic holidaymakers and returning diaspora pack the corniche beaches and the ferries, and hotels in Ain El Turck book out. Ramadan shifts the day's rhythm, with quiet afternoons and busy late evenings.

Top things to do in Oran

  1. Santa Cruz Fort and Chapel - the lookout on the Murdjadjo

    history scenic ⭐ Highly recommended

The Spanish fort crowns the mountain west of the centre, and just below it the chapel of Santa Cruz, built after the cholera epidemic of 1849, carries a statue of the Virgin facing the sea. The view takes in the port, the bay and Mers El Kebir.

  2. Sidi El Houari - the Spanish and Ottoman old town

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

The oldest quarter, tumbling down the slope below the fort, holds the Porte d'Espagne, the Bey's palace, the Pasha Mosque built after the Spanish left in 1792, and the shrine of the city's patron saint. Much is crumbling, which is part of its pull.

  3. Front de Mer - the seafront balcony

    scenic 👍 Popular

The long boulevard above the port is the city's evening promenade, a raised terrace of palms and French-era facades with views over the harbour to the mountain. Families walk it after dark, and the cafes behind it stay busy late.

  4. Place du 1er Novembre - the theatre and the city hall lions

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The old Place d'Armes is the heart of colonial Oran, framed by the ornate regional theatre and the city hall guarded by two bronze lions, the symbol the city adopted as its own. The shopping streets of the centre run off it.

  5. Ahmed Zabana Museum - archaeology and art

    history culture arts

The city's national museum gathers Roman mosaics, prehistoric finds from western Algeria, natural history collections and a gallery of Algerian painting, a useful primer before a trip to Tlemcen.

  6. Sacre-Coeur Cathedral - a colonial cathedral turned library

    history culture arts

The twin-towered Romano-Byzantine cathedral of the French era now serves as a public library, one of the most striking reuses of a colonial building in the country. The facade is the reason to come.

  7. Rai on the corniche - the music Oran gave the world

nightlife music culture arts 👍 Popular

Rai grew out of Oran's bars and cabarets before Khaled and Cheb Mami took it global. The cabarets and summer venues along the western corniche toward Ain El Turck still put on live rai late into the night.

  8. Chateau Neuf and the Letang promenade - Spanish ramparts and gardens

    history scenic

The Rozalcazar citadel, begun by the Spanish and later the seat of the Ottoman beys, rises above a terraced garden promenade that looks over the port. It makes a shady walk between the centre and the seafront.

A little history of Oran

Andalusian traders founded Oran in the early 10th century as a port for the trade of the western Maghreb. Spain took it in 1509 and, apart from a brief Ottoman interval, held it for nearly three centuries, ringing the bay with fortresses; after an earthquake in 1790 the Spanish gave it up to the Bey of Mascara.

France seized the city in 1831 and built it into the most European city in Algeria, with a large Spanish, French and Jewish population, the boulevards of the centre and the setting Camus used for The Plague. In 1940 the British attacked the French fleet at neighbouring Mers El Kebir. Most of the European population left at independence in 1962, and the city's rai scene rose in the decades after.

FAQs about Oran

▸ When is the best time to visit Oran?

Any month works for the weather. Spring and autumn suit walking the old town and the climb to Santa Cruz, while summer is beach season, when the corniche and the ferries are at their busiest. Winter is quieter and mild.

▸ How many days do I need in Oran?

Two days cover Santa Cruz, Sidi El Houari, the centre and the seafront. Three or four let you add a beach day on the western corniche and a trip to Tlemcen, ideally with a night there.

▸ Do I need a visa to visit Algeria?

Most nationalities need a visa arranged in advance through an Algerian consulate, and the process can be slow, so start early. Check the current rules for your passport before booking.

▸ Is Oran the city in Camus's The Plague?

Yes. Camus set the novel in Oran and drew on the colonial city he knew in the 1940s. Much of the French-era centre he describes, around the main square and the seafront, is still standing.

▸ What languages are spoken in Oran?

Algerian Arabic is the everyday language and French is widely understood, especially in hotels and business. Spanish words run through the local dialect from the long Spanish period, but English is not widely spoken.
