Sofia

A European capital with a 2,000-metre mountain at the end of its main boulevard.

Sofia is Bulgaria's capital, a city of layered history sitting on a high plain beneath Vitosha mountain. Roman Serdica's streets lie exposed beside Ottoman mosques, Orthodox churches and communist-era avenues, and the gold domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral crown the centre. It is compact, green and good value, with mineral springs on the pavements and real mountain trails at the end of the tram lines.

When to avoid Sofia

December to February is cold and grey, and winter heating often leaves a smoggy haze over the basin. Winter is also when Vitosha has its snow, and there is small-scale skiing at Aleko above the city, though Bulgaria's real ski resorts are Bansko and Borovets. March and November are changeable shoulder months.

Top things to do in Sofia

  1. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - Sofia's golden landmark

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

Built between 1882 and 1912 to honour the Russian soldiers who died freeing Bulgaria from Ottoman rule, it is one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the Balkans. The crypt holds a museum of Bulgarian icons.

  2. Boyana Church - medieval frescoes at the foot of Vitosha

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

A small UNESCO-listed church whose 1259 frescoes, with strikingly lifelike faces, predate the Italian Renaissance. Visits are short and in small groups to protect the paintings; pair it with the National History Museum nearby.

  3. Rotunda of St George and ancient Serdica

    history 👍 Popular

The fourth-century red-brick rotunda stands in a courtyard behind the Presidency, the city's oldest building. Around Serdika metro station, excavated Roman streets, baths and foundations are open to walk through.

  4. Banya Bashi, the synagogue and the mineral baths

    history culture arts

Within a few hundred metres stand a sixteenth-century Ottoman mosque, Europe's largest Sephardic synagogue and the grand old Central Mineral Baths, now the city history museum. Locals fill bottles at the warm spring taps outside.

  5. Vitosha - Boyana Waterfall, the Golden Bridges and Cherni Vrah

nature wildlife scenic ⭐ Highly recommended

The mountain's nature park starts at the city's edge. Walk up from Boyana to the waterfall, wander the boulder river at Zlatni Mostove, or climb from Aleko to the 2,290-metre summit of Cherni Vrah.

  6. Museum of Socialist Art - the statues the regime left behind

    history culture arts

A sculpture park of Lenins, Dimitrovs and heroic workers removed from squares after 1989, plus the red star that once topped the Party House.

  7. Vitosha Boulevard and Bulgarian food

    food 👍 Popular

Sofia's pedestrian main street runs toward the mountain, lined with terraces. Eat shopska salad, tarator cold soup, banitsa pastry for breakfast, kebapche grilled meat and a glass of Mavrud or Melnik red.

  8. National Archaeological Museum - Thracian gold

    history culture arts

Housed in a fifteenth-century former mosque, it holds Roman and medieval finds and, at times, dazzling Thracian gold treasures.

A little history of Sofia

The Thracian Serdi tribe gave the settlement its first name, and under Rome it grew into Serdica, a walled city on the road from Belgrade to Constantinople. Constantine the Great is said to have called it his Rome, and in 343 it hosted a church council. The Huns sacked it, the Byzantines rebuilt it, and in 809 Khan Krum took it for the First Bulgarian Empire as Sredets. By the fourteenth century it was named after the Church of St Sofia.

The Ottomans held it for nearly five centuries from 1382, leaving mosques and baths. Russian troops took it in 1878, and a year later it became capital of the new Bulgarian state, rebuilt with boulevards, a cathedral and grand public buildings. After the Second World War it became a communist capital of monumental avenues until Todor Zhivkov's fall in 1989.

FAQs about Sofia

▸ When is the best time to visit Sofia?

April to October is best, mild to warm and good for both the city and Vitosha's trails, with May, June and September the most comfortable. December to February is cold, grey and often smoggy, though it brings snow to Vitosha.

▸ How many days do I need in Sofia?

Two days covers the centre, Boyana Church and a taste of Vitosha. Allow three or four to add Rila Monastery and Plovdiv as day trips.

▸ Can you ski from Sofia?

There is small-scale skiing at Aleko on Vitosha, reachable by bus from the city, but it is a local hill rather than a ski destination. For a proper ski trip, Borovets is about 1-1.5 hours away and Bansko about 2.5-3 hours.

▸ Is Sofia expensive?

No. It is one of the better-value capitals in the European Union, with cheap public transport, inexpensive restaurants and many free sights. Hotels in the centre cost more than elsewhere in Bulgaria but remain reasonable by European standards.

▸ Do Bulgarians really shake their heads for yes?

Traditionally, yes: a side-to-side shake means yes and a nod means no, though many people in Sofia switch for visitors. When in doubt, ask for a spoken da or ne.

▸ Is Sofia worth visiting or should I go straight to Plovdiv?

Sofia is worth at least two days for Alexander Nevsky, Boyana Church and Vitosha, and it is the base for Rila Monastery. Plovdiv has the prettier old town; most travellers do both.
