Sanya sits at the southern tip of Hainan, the one stretch of China that is properly tropical, and the country treats it as its winter beach. The coast runs through a string of resort bays - Yalong Bay the best known - with an ordinary, humid port city behind them. Inland it turns to rainforest and Li villages within an hour. The old imperial frontier is still marked at Tianya Haijiao, where boulders on the shore are carved with the phrase that named the end of the known world.

When to avoid Sanya
Jul-Oct is typhoon and heavy-rain season: the humidity is relentless, island boats stop when the sea gets up, and flights do get cancelled. The awkward part is that the good months are also the crowded and expensive ones, when the whole country comes south for winter sun and the Lunar New Year holiday brings the worst of the crush.

Fly into Sanya Phoenix (SYX) on the city's western beach; 15-20 min to the nearest sand, around 45 min to the far bays.

A little history of Sanya
For most of Chinese history this was the end of the map. Yazhou, the prefecture at the island's southern tip, was where the court sent officials it wanted out of the way, and the boulders at Tianya Haijiao carry exactly that idea in stone. The Li had been on Hainan for thousands of years before any of that, and the interior is still theirs.
The city you see is barely forty years old. Sanya was upgraded to a city in 1984 and Hainan split from Guangdong four years later to become its own province and Special Economic Zone; the bays were empty then. Resort building started at Yalong Bay in the 1990s, accelerated once the island was designated a tourism zone, and offshore duty-free shopping turned the place into a shopping destination as well as a beach one. Almost nothing on the coast predates 1990.
Han armies annex Hainan and set up commanderies; for centuries the far south is governed at arm's length.
The monk Jianzhen is blown onto Hainan on a failed voyage to Japan - an association the Nanshan coast still trades on.
Yazhou, covering today's Sanya, is a standard destination for officials banished to the empire's southern limit.
Huang Daopo carries the cotton spinning and weaving she learned from Li women on Hainan back to the Yangtze delta.

▸ When is the best time to visit Sanya?
Nov-Apr is the reliable window: warm sea, low rain, and the reason half the country flies south in winter. Summer and early autumn bring heat, heavy rain and typhoons, and boats to the islands stop whenever the sea is up. The trade-off is that the good months are also the crowded ones.
▸ How far apart are the bays?
Further than they look. The coast runs for tens of kilometres, and Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay are both a long drive from downtown, so the wrong base means a car ride for every meal. Taxis and ride-hail do most of the moving; the loop rail is quicker if your stop is on it.
▸ Is the diving any good?
It is China's main dive destination rather than a world-class one. The coral off the offshore islands is modest by tropical standards, but the water is warm all year and the whole operation is built for first-timers, so most people here are diving for the first time.
▸ What is the catch at the seafood markets?
Buying live seafood by weight and having it cooked nearby is the classic Sanya meal, and also where visitors get stung. Watch the scale, agree what you are paying for before anything is bagged, and use stalls that post their rates in the open.
▸ Does Hainan have its own entry rules?
Hainan has long run entry arrangements separate from, and looser than, the mainland's standard visa, and the terms have changed repeatedly. Treat anything written in advance as out of date, and confirm what applies to your passport and your route close to travel.
▸ Is Sanya only resorts?
The bays are, deliberately, and some have almost no street life at all. Downtown is an ordinary, loud Chinese city with a serious seafood market, and an hour inland the island turns to rainforest and Li and Miao villages. Use the resort as a base, not as the trip.
