Zhangjiajie
The real-world floating mountains of Avatar: thousands of sandstone pillars rising out of the mist.
Zhangjiajie in northwest Hunan is the gateway to Wulingyuan, a UNESCO-listed forest of thousands of quartz-sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains of Avatar. Beside the city rises Tianmen Mountain, with its cliff walkways and a natural arch punched through the summit, so most trips split time between the two very different areas.

A little history of Zhangjiajie
The sandstone pillars of northwest Hunan were home to Tujia, Bai and Miao communities for centuries, and the city that serves them, long called Dayong, has a recorded history going back to around 221 BC. Tianmen Cave, the vast arch high on Tianmen Mountain, is said to have opened in 263 AD when a cliff face collapsed, and the mountain took its 'Heaven's Gate' name from it.
Modern Zhangjiajie is a tourism creation. A state forest farm became China's first national forest park in 1982, the wider Wulingyuan area was inscribed by UNESCO in 1992, and two years later Dayong renamed itself after the park to cash in on the fame. Cable cars, cliff elevators, a glass bridge and a Hollywood connection followed, turning a remote corner of Hunan into one of China's busiest scenic areas.
A cliff collapse opens Tianmen Cave, the 131 m high natural arch that gives Tianmen Mountain its name.
The State Council names the state-owned Zhangjiajie forest farm China's first national forest park (about 4,810 ha).
Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, which contains the forest park, is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city of Dayong is renamed Zhangjiajie to borrow the park's growing fame.
The Bailong Elevator opens on a Wulingyuan cliff face, followed in 2005 by the 7.5 km Tianmen Mountain cableway.
Officials announce the Southern Sky Column is renamed 'Avatar Hallelujah Mountain' after the film's floating peaks; the move draws a backlash but the name sticks.
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge opens in August, a 430 m glass-floored span over a 300 m drop billed as the world's longest and highest.

FAQs about Zhangjiajie
▸ When is the best time to visit Zhangjiajie?
Any month works, so pick by trade-off. April-June is the wettest and foggiest stretch: moody mist around the pillars, but whole viewpoints can vanish into cloud, and the best views often come an hour or two after rain. July-August is hot, green and packed with Chinese school-holiday crowds. Mid-October to November brings autumn colour and the clearest, most stable views, while December-February is cold and quiet, with the occasional snow-dusted peak. Avoid the national holidays if you can: Golden Week (Oct 1-7), the May Day break and Chinese New Year mean hours-long queues and inflated hotel prices, so go the week after instead.
▸ How many days do I need in Zhangjiajie?
Plan 3-4 days. Give Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the wider Wulingyuan area 2-3 days (the park ticket is valid for 4 days, so you can come and go) and Tianmen Mountain one full day. Add half a day if you want the Grand Canyon glass bridge. The two main areas are about 40 km apart, so many people sleep in Wulingyuan for the park days and in Zhangjiajie city for Tianmen.
▸ Wulingyuan or Tianmen Mountain - which should I visit?
Ideally both, because they are different experiences. Wulingyuan (the UNESCO area including Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream) is the forest of thousands of sandstone pillars and needs 2-3 days of walking, buses and lifts. Tianmen Mountain, just outside Zhangjiajie city, is a single massive peak reached by a 7.5 km cable car, with Tianmen Cave, cliff-hugging glass walkways and the 99-bend road, and it fits into one day. If you only have a day, Tianmen is easier; if you came for the pillars, it has to be Wulingyuan.
▸ Is Zhangjiajie really the Avatar mountains?
Partly. Zhangjiajie says a Hollywood photographer shot the area in 2008 and that the pillars inspired Pandora's floating Hallelujah Mountains, and in 2010 the Southern Sky Column in Yuanjiajie was renamed 'Avatar Hallelujah Mountain'. Huangshan is also cited as an inspiration, and the renaming was controversial at home. Either way, the resemblance is real, the name has stuck, and the Avatar link is now part of the park's signage and marketing.
▸ Is Zhangjiajie safe for tourists?
Yes, it is a safe, heavily managed tourist area with low crime. The real risks are crowds, slippery steps in rain and fog, and long climbs on narrow cliff paths, so wear grippy shoes and keep to the railings. The glass bridge and cliff walkways run with visitor caps, shoe covers and strict bag rules, and the bridge has passed public load tests since it opened. Watch belongings in peak-holiday crushes and keep food away from the macaques on the trails.
▸ Do I need a visa to visit Zhangjiajie?
It depends on your passport, and the rules have been loosening fast. China's unilateral visa-free policy lets ordinary passport holders from a long and growing list of countries (including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and most of Europe) stay up to 30 days for tourism; the list is extended and revised regularly, so check it before you book. Separately, since December 17, 2024 the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit lets citizens of around 55 countries, including the US, UK and Canada, enter through designated ports such as Changsha Huanghua and Zhangjiajie Hehua airports if they fly on to a third country or region. Confirm current eligibility with China's National Immigration Administration (nia.gov.cn) or your nearest Chinese embassy.
