Cienfuegos

A French-founded city of neoclassical colonnades on one of the Caribbean's finest bays.

Cienfuegos is the Pearl of the South, a city founded in 1819 by French settlers on one of Cuba's great natural bays. Its UNESCO-listed centre is a straight grid of neoclassical colonnades around Parque Jose Marti, where a cathedral, a triumphal arch and a gilded nineteenth-century theatre share one square. A long Prado and Malecon run south to Punta Gorda and the Moorish Palacio de Valle on the water. Calmer and more open than Trinidad, it is a natural stop between Havana and the centre of the island.

When to avoid Cienfuegos

June and September are the months to avoid: hot, humid and among the wettest, and hurricane risk is highest from August to October. The rest of the wet season brings sticky heat and afternoon storms. November to April is drier and far more comfortable for walking the city.

Top things to do in Cienfuegos

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The grand central square, laid out at the founding, is ringed by the Catedral de la Purisima Concepcion, the old town hall, colonnaded mansions and a triumphal arch raised for the new republic. A bandstand and a statue of Marti sit in the middle.

  2. Teatro Tomas Terry - inside the sugar-boom theatre

culture arts history ⭐ Highly recommended

Built in memory of a sugar magnate and opened in 1890, the theatre on Parque Marti keeps its horseshoe of wooden boxes, painted ceiling and gilded facade mosaics. Take a tour by day or catch a performance at night.

  3. Palacio de Valle - Moorish fantasy at Punta Gorda

    history scenic 👍 Popular

An early twentieth-century mansion that mixes Moorish arches, Gothic and Venetian touches near the tip of the peninsula. Climb to the roof terrace for a drink and the sunset over the bay.

  4. Paseo del Prado and the Malecon - walk to Punta Gorda

    scenic culture arts 👍 Popular

The long central boulevard, with its statue of the singer Benny More, runs into the seafront Malecon and on down the peninsula past old wooden villas and the domed yacht club to La Punta.

  5. Castillo de Jagua - ferry to the bay-mouth fortress

    history scenic ⭐ Highly recommended

The eighteenth-century fort that guarded the narrow entrance to the bay against pirates stands above a fishing village. The slow passenger ferry across the bay is half the pleasure.

  6. Palacio Ferrer - climb the corner tower

    history scenic

The ornate mansion on the corner of Parque Marti, now a cultural centre, has a wrought-iron spiral stair up to a cupola with views across the rooftops to the bay.

  7. Cementerio La Reina and Tomas Acea - the city's two cemeteries

    history culture arts

La Reina, near the bay, buries its dead in wall niches and is known for a marble statue of a sleeping woman. Tomas Acea, on the edge of town, opens through a grand colonnaded gateway modelled on a Greek temple.

A little history of Cienfuegos

The Taino knew the bay as Jagua, and for two centuries after the Spanish arrived it was a haunt of pirates and smugglers until the Castillo de Jagua was built to guard its mouth. The city itself came late: in 1819 French settlers from Bordeaux and Louisiana, led by Louis de Clouet, founded Fernandina de Jagua under a Spanish scheme to bring more white colonists to the island. It was renamed Cienfuegos in 1829 after the Captain General of the day.

The founders' straight streets filled with neoclassical mansions as the port boomed on sugar in the nineteenth century, and sugar money paid for the Terry theatre and the palaces of Punta Gorda. In 1957 the city saw a naval uprising against Batista, and in 2005 UNESCO listed its historic centre as an outstanding example of nineteenth-century Spanish colonial town planning.

FAQs about Cienfuegos

▸ When is the best time to visit Cienfuegos?

November to April is the best stretch, with drier, more comfortable days for walking the centre and the Malecon. June and September are the months to avoid, and hurricane risk peaks from August to October.

▸ How many days do I need in Cienfuegos?

Two days covers the square, the Terry theatre, Punta Gorda and the ferry to the Castillo de Jagua. Add a third for El Nicho, the botanical garden or a beach afternoon.

▸ Cienfuegos or Trinidad?

Many people see both, an hour and a half apart. Cienfuegos is a working city of wide neoclassical streets on a bay; Trinidad is a smaller cobbled colonial town with more visitors and livelier nights.

▸ Is there a beach at Cienfuegos?

Not in the city itself. Playa Rancho Luna, a short drive south-east near the bay mouth, is the nearest beach, small but good for a swim and some snorkelling.

▸ Is Cienfuegos expensive?

Not by Caribbean standards, and casas particulares are good value. Cuba's money rules and supplies change often, so bring enough cash and check current advice before you travel.
