Nadi

Fiji's front door, the place to land, eat a proper curry and launch for the islands.

Nadi is Fiji's main arrival point on the dry west coast of Viti Levu, home to the country's largest international airport, and most travellers pass through it twice whether they plan to or not. It is a working sugar-belt town rather than a beach destination, but the brightly painted Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, a strong Indo-Fijian curry scene and easy access to hot springs, highland gorges and island day cruises make a short stay worthwhile before heading out to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands.

Skip Feb-Mar, the peak of the wet and cyclone season; and be honest with yourself that the town itself is a gateway, so the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands deserve most of your nights.

Top things to do in Nadi

  1. Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple - Nadi's great Hindu landmark

    culture arts history 👍 Popular

The largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere, a riot of painted gods and carved ceilings at the south end of the main street, walkable from town. Entry around FJD 8, open daily; cover shoulders and knees and leave shoes at the door.

  2. Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool - soak and slather

wellness nature wildlife ⭐ Highly recommended

In the Sabeto valley below the Sleeping Giant, you smear yourself in grey mineral mud, bake dry in the sun, then rinse off in a chain of warm spring pools. Entry around FJD 30, with massages paid to the attendants directly.

  3. Garden of the Sleeping Giant - orchids under the ridge

    nature wildlife scenic 👍 Popular

A botanical garden at the foot of the Sabeto range with over 2,000 orchid varieties, lily ponds and jungle boardwalks. Adults around FJD 25-30, children half price; open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 9am-12pm.

  4. Nadi Market - Saturday morning produce and snacks

    food culture arts shopping

The town's municipal market is busiest on Saturday mornings, piled with dalo, cassava, tropical fruit and yaqona (kava root), with stalls selling roti and Fijian fried bread to eat as you browse. Namaka Market near the airport road is the smaller local alternative.

  5. Nadi curry trail - eat your way around Nadi

    food ⭐ Highly recommended

Nadi is a curry-mad Indo-Fijian town: Sitar at Wailoaloa for rich meat curries, thali and tandoori, Tata's near the temple for some of the most authentic curries on Viti Levu, Saffron in town for northern Indian, and Bulaccino on the Nadi River for local-style curry with dhal, chutney and roti in a beer garden.

  6. Port Denarau - the marina boardwalk and island gateway

    shopping nightlife music 👍 Popular

The busy marina on Denarau Island where nearly every day cruise and ferry to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands departs, lined with shops, bars and waterfront restaurants. Come back in the evening for the nightly cultural performance and live bands.

  7. Wailoaloa Beach - Nadi's laid-back backpacker strand

    scenic

A long, low-key beach about 4 km from town, lined with budget guesthouses and beach bars and looking out over Nadi Bay toward the islands. It is a place for sunset beers and cheap eats rather than swimming-pool water.

  8. Skydive Fiji - tandem jump over Denarau and Nadi Bay

    adventure

Skydive Fiji runs its drop zone on Denarau, with up to 70 seconds of freefall over the reefs and Mamanuca islands. Tandems run roughly FJD 740 (10,000 ft), FJD 830 (12,000 ft) and FJD 915 (13,000 ft), with pick-ups from Nadi and Denarau.

  9. Sabeto valley ziplines - jungle lines below the Sleeping Giant

    adventure nature wildlife

An adventure park in the Sabeto valley strings several ziplines through tropical rainforest, with waterfalls and a jungle safari ride on the same site; operators collect from Nadi and Denarau hotels. For a bigger circuit, Zip Fiji runs a 16-line course with abseiling at Momi, south of town.

  10. Fiji Culture Village - kava ceremony and evening show

    culture arts

A recreated traditional Fijian village where locals walk you through a yaqona (kava) ceremony, village crafts and customs, finishing with an evening dance and fire show. Touristy, but a fun, accessible introduction to iTaukei culture.

A little history of Nadi

Nadi grew up as a farming and market town on the dry western side of Viti Levu, home to a large Indo-Fijian community whose roots show in its oldest landmark: a small Hindu temple founded by Ramaswami Pillai in 1913, which became the seed of today's Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple.

What changed the town for good was the airfield. Work on a grass aerodrome began in 1939 and US forces expanded it in 1942 as a wartime staging post across the Pacific. The strip became Nadi International Airport, turning a modest township, formally established in 1947, into Fiji's front door.

Timeline
1913

Ramaswami Pillai founds the original Sri Siva Subramaniya temple on leased land in Nadi.

1939

Nadi is confirmed as Fiji's main aerodrome site and New Zealand engineers begin the first airstrip.

1942

US forces significantly expand the airfield as a WWII staging post, the base of today's Nadi International Airport.

1947

Nadi is granted township status.

1994

The rebuilt Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, designed by Chennai architect V. Ganapati Sthapati, is consecrated on 15 July, the largest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere.

FAQs about Nadi

▸ When is the best time to visit Nadi?

May-Nov is the sweet spot: the drier, cooler season with settled weather for island hopping out of Nadi. Jan, Apr and Dec also work well, if hotter and more humid. Feb and Mar are the months to avoid: they sit at the heart of the wet and cyclone season, with the heaviest rain.

▸ How many days do you need in Nadi?

Most travellers spend 1-3 days in Nadi itself, enough for the town, the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple and a day trip or two, before heading out to the Mamanuca or Yasawa islands or along the Coral Coast.

▸ Is Nadi safe for tourists?

Generally yes. The resort areas such as Denarau are considered very safe, and the main risks are petty theft and tourist scams rather than violent crime. Take more care in Nadi Town at night, around markets and ATMs, avoid walking alone after dark, use hotel-arranged taxis, and respect ocean conditions, as drowning is a real risk in Fiji.

▸ Do I need a visa to visit Nadi?

Many nationalities receive a visitor permit on arrival at Nadi International Airport, but rules depend on your passport. Check Fiji's current entry requirements with the Fiji Immigration Department or your government's travel advice before you fly.

▸ Why is there a large Hindu temple in Nadi?

Nadi has a large Indo-Fijian community. The Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, consecrated in 1994 on the site of a community temple dating to 1913, was designed by the Chennai temple architect V. Ganapati Sthapati and is open to respectful visitors.
