Porvoo

Finland's best-kept wooden old town, with red riverside storehouses an hour from Helsinki.

Porvoo is one of Finland's oldest towns, a bilingual river port about an hour east of Helsinki. Its Old Town is a hillside tangle of cobbled lanes and painted wooden houses below a medieval stone cathedral, and the row of red ochre storehouses along the riverbank is one of the most photographed views in the country. The national poet Runeberg lived and died here, and the town makes much of him, from his preserved home to the tart named after him.

When to avoid Porvoo

November to March is cold and dark, and the Old Town is quiet with shorter opening hours, though its December Christmas market and the Runeberg tarts of early February are genuine winter draws. Summer is the best weather and the busiest, with day-trippers filling the lanes by midday.

Top things to do in Porvoo

  1. Porvoo Old Town - cobbled lanes and wooden houses

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

Wander the steep, crooked streets of the Old Town, still on their medieval plan, past pastel wooden houses, craft shops, galleries and cafes in old courtyards. It is small enough to walk end to end in an hour and pretty enough to take all afternoon.

  2. Red riverside storehouses - the view from the old bridge

    scenic history ⭐ Highly recommended

The red ochre shore warehouses that once held the town's trade goods line the east bank of the river. Cross the old bridge to the west bank for the classic view, best in the low evening light of summer.

  3. Porvoo Cathedral - the medieval church on the hill

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The grey stone cathedral with its tall shingled roof crowns the Old Town. Tsar Alexander I opened the Diet of Porvoo here in 1809, and the interior was carefully restored after a fire destroyed the roof in 2006.

  4. Runeberg's Home - the national poet's house

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

Johan Ludvig Runeberg's home on the edge of the Empire Quarter was turned into a museum soon after his death and kept as the family left it, down to the furniture and his study. A short walk away is the sculpture museum of his son Walter Runeberg.

  5. Porvoo Museum - the Old Town Hall square

    history culture arts

The town museum occupies the 18th-century Old Town Hall and the merchant's house beside it on the square at the heart of the Old Town, covering Porvoo's history, decorative arts and the art of its painters and sculptors.

  6. Linnamaki Castle Hill - the town's oldest site

    history nature wildlife

A wooded hill just north of the Old Town carries the grassed earthworks of a medieval fortification that likely gave the town its Swedish name, Borga. It is a short climb for quiet paths and views over the river valley.

  7. Albert Edelfelt's studio - a painter's summer atelier at Haikko

    culture arts scenic

The 19th-century painter Albert Edelfelt worked his summers in a wooden studio near the sea at Haikko, south of town. It opens as a small museum in summer, surrounded by the shoreline and light he painted.

  8. Runeberg tarts and Porvoo chocolate - the town's sweet trade

    food 👍 Popular

Try a Runeberg tart, a small almond and rum-soaked cake topped with raspberry jam and icing, which Porvoo's cafes sell year round. The town's old confectioner Brunberg is known for its chocolate-covered foam kisses.

  9. Porvoo river - a summer boat trip

    scenic

Sightseeing boats leave the riverside in summer for short cruises downriver towards the archipelago, giving a water-level look at the storehouses and the Old Town before the river opens into the sea.

A little history of Porvoo

Porvoo grew up where a river meets a sheltered bay on the Gulf of Finland, and by the 14th century it was one of the first towns in Finland, then part of the Swedish realm. Its Swedish name, Borga, recalls the fortified hill above the river. War and fire swept it repeatedly, most destructively in 1760, but the Old Town was rebuilt on its medieval street plan, which is why its lanes still twist up the hill.

In 1809, after Russia took Finland from Sweden, Tsar Alexander I convened the Diet of Porvoo in the cathedral, where Finland's estates swore allegiance and he confirmed their laws, the start of Finland's autonomy as a Grand Duchy. Later the poet Runeberg made the town his home, and it has stayed bilingual, with a large Swedish-speaking community.

FAQs about Porvoo

▸ When is the best time to visit Porvoo?

May to September has the best weather, with long light evenings by the river; July and August are the busiest. November to March is cold and dark, but December brings the Christmas market to the Old Town and early February is Runeberg tart season.

▸ Is Porvoo a day trip from Helsinki or worth an overnight?

Most people visit as a day trip, and the Old Town can be seen in an afternoon. Staying a night is worth it if you can: the lanes are far quieter in the morning and evening, and the riverside light is at its best.

▸ How do I get from Helsinki to Porvoo?

Coaches from Kamppi in central Helsinki take about an hour and run often. Driving takes roughly the same. In summer a sightseeing ship makes the trip by sea, a much slower but scenic option. There is no regular passenger train.

▸ Do people in Porvoo speak Finnish or Swedish?

Both. Porvoo is officially bilingual, with a large Swedish-speaking minority, so street signs carry both names and the town is also known as Borga. English is widely spoken, especially in shops and cafes.

▸ What is a Runeberg tart?

A small cylindrical almond cake, moistened with rum or punch and topped with raspberry jam in a ring of icing. It is said to have been a favourite of the poet Runeberg, and Finland eats it around his birthday in early February; Porvoo sells it all year.

▸ Is Porvoo expensive?

It is in line with Finland generally, which means expensive by European standards. Old Town cafes and boutique stays cost more than the centre, and a day trip from Helsinki keeps costs down.
