Debrecen is Hungary's second city and the capital of the Great Plain, a Calvinist market town that grew rich on cattle and stayed stubbornly Protestant while the rest of the country was Catholic. Its centre is essentially one long street ending at the yellow twin towers of the Great Reformed Church, where in 1849 a revolutionary parliament declared the Habsburgs deposed. North of it lies the Great Forest, a park of thermal baths, a boating lake and the university's palatial main building.

When to avoid Debrecen
The Great Plain runs to extremes and there is nothing in the landscape to soften them. Winter is genuinely cold, flat and grey, with the wind coming across open country and very little shelter in the streets. High summer is hot and dry, which is why the city's answer to it is a forest full of thermal and open-air pools. Spring and early autumn are the plain at its most agreeable, and Hortobagy is at its best then too.

A little history of Debrecen
Debrecen grew up as a market town on the plain, without walls or a castle, trading cattle driven west to Vienna and Nuremberg. It took the Reformation early and completely, becoming the seat of Hungarian Calvinism and earning the nickname the Calvinist Rome; a synod here in 1567 fixed the doctrine of the Hungarian Reformed church. Through the Ottoman century the town survived by an act of pure pragmatism, paying tribute simultaneously to the Ottomans, the Habsburgs and the princes of Transylvania.
It has twice been the country's capital in emergencies. In 1849 the revolutionary government moved here and declared the Habsburgs deposed from the pulpit of the Great Church, and in 1944 a provisional national government assembled in the city as the front line moved west. The university, founded in the early twentieth century and built out in the Great Forest, made it a centre of medicine and research, and the city is now one of Hungary's main manufacturing and student towns.

Yes, if you want a Hungarian city that is not shaped around visitors. It is the natural base for Hortobagy and the spa towns, and it is on the fast line between Budapest and the Romanian border, so it costs little to break the journey here.
