Dead Sea (Sweimeh)

The lowest shore on earth, where the water is so salty you float whether you mean to or not.

Jordan's shore of the Dead Sea is the lowest dry land on earth, more than 400 metres below sea level, where water about ten times saltier than the ocean holds you up without effort. The resort strip near Sweimeh is a line of big hotels with private beaches, pools and spas, where visitors float, coat themselves in black mud and watch the sun go down behind the hills across the water. Most people stay a night or two, and the biblical sites along the valley and on the escarpment above are all within an hour.

When to avoid Dead Sea (Sweimeh)

June to August is the time to avoid: this far below sea level the heat is fierce, the water is bath-warm and the beach is only comfortable early and late in the day. Fridays and public holidays bring day-trippers from Amman to the public beaches and hotel day passes, so midweek is calmer.

Top things to do in Dead Sea (Sweimeh)

  1. Dead Sea - float off a resort beach

    wellness scenic 👍 Popular

Wade in to knee depth, sit back and the water lifts you flat. Resort beaches have paths or shuttles down to the retreating shoreline, lifeguards and freshwater showers at the water's edge; ten to fifteen minutes at a time is plenty.

  2. Dead Sea mud - the black mineral coat

    wellness 👍 Popular

Hotel beaches keep tubs of mud by the shore: plaster it on, let it dry and tighten in the sun, then float it off in the sea and rinse under the showers. Mud and salt products are sold everywhere to take home.

  3. Bethany Beyond the Jordan - the baptism site

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

Al-Maghtas, the World Heritage site where many Christians place the baptism of Jesus, a short drive north of the hotels. Guided visits walk past excavated Byzantine church foundations and Elijah's Hill to the river itself, narrow and muddy, with the far bank only metres away.

  4. Wadi Mujib - the Siq Trail water hike

adventure nature wildlife ⭐ Highly recommended

Wade, scramble and swim in a lifejacket up a narrow sandstone gorge where the Mujib river reaches the Dead Sea, ending at a waterfall. Expect to be soaked to the chest; the trail opens roughly spring to autumn and closes in winter for flash-flood risk.

  5. Dead Sea Panorama - the view from the escarpment

    scenic nature wildlife

A lookout complex on the road climbing toward Ma'in, with a small museum on the sea's geology and shrinking shoreline, a short cliff-edge walk and the whole northern basin laid out below. Late afternoon gives the best light.

  6. Resort spas - salt, mud and sea-water pools

    wellness

The big hotels run full spas with mud wraps, salt scrubs and indoor pools filled with heated Dead Sea water, a gentler way to float when the beach is too hot, windy or crowded.

  7. Sunset over the far shore

    scenic

The sun sets behind the hills on the western side of the sea, and the flat, mineral-heavy water holds the colour long after. Watch from the beach or a hotel terrace, then look for the lights coming on across the water.

The Dead Sea Highway follows the shore south and runs on through Wadi Araba to Aqaba, about 3-4 hr

TBC

Walking

Resorts are self-contained; the highway between them has little pavement and the sights are spread along the shore

A little history of Dead Sea (Sweimeh)

The Dead Sea fills the floor of the Jordan Rift, where the Arabian and African plates pull apart, and its shore is the lowest land on earth. Almost nothing lives in the water, which gave the sea its name. The Greeks called it Lake Asphaltites for the lumps of bitumen that rose to the surface, gathered for caulking boats and, in Egypt, for embalming. The plateau above the eastern shore was the biblical kingdom of Moab, and tradition sets Sodom and Gomorrah at the sea's southern end.

Herod the Great held the fortress of Machaerus on the escarpment and bathed in the hot springs below it, and Christians have long revered the river crossing just north of the sea as the place where John baptised Jesus. In the twentieth century the Jordan's water was diverted upstream and mineral works spread across the south, and the sea began to fall. The hotel strip near Sweimeh grew up along the retreating shore, turning a biblical landscape into Jordan's spa coast.

FAQs about Dead Sea (Sweimeh)

▸ When is the best time to visit the Dead Sea?

October to April. Winter at the shore stays mild even when Amman is cold and wet, which makes it a popular winter escape, and spring and autumn are warm enough for long afternoons on the beach. June to August is fiercely hot this far below sea level, so beach time shrinks to early morning and evening.

▸ How do you float in the Dead Sea safely?

Walk in, sit back and let the water lift you, then stay on your back. Never put your face under or splash: salt in the eyes stings badly and swallowing it is dangerous. Do not shave beforehand, cover any cuts, wear sandals over the salt crystals, keep each dip short and rinse off in fresh water afterwards.

▸ Can you visit the Dead Sea as a day trip from Amman?

Easily: it is about an hour's drive. Most day visitors buy a resort day pass, which covers the beach, pools and showers, while the public beach complex is the cheaper, more basic option. Friday is the busiest day, when families from Amman head down.

▸ Is the Dead Sea shrinking?

Yes, by around a metre a year. The Jordan River that feeds it is heavily tapped upstream and mineral works evaporate water in the south, so the shoreline keeps retreating. Hotels have extended their paths down to the water, and sinkholes have opened along parts of the shore away from the resorts.

▸ Do I need my passport at the Dead Sea?

Carry it. The shore runs along the border, so there are police and military checkpoints on the Dead Sea Highway and around the baptism site, and you will be asked for ID. The checks are routine and quick for visitors.

▸ How long should you spend at the Dead Sea?

One night is enough to float, do the mud and catch a sunset; two lets you add Wadi Mujib or the baptism site without rushing. Many travellers slot it between Amman and Petra, or come down for the day from Madaba.
