Mount Kenya (Nanyuki)

Africa's second summit, rockier and far quieter than Kilimanjaro, with a trekking peak fit walkers can reach and two true summits only climbers can.

Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest mountain, a jagged, glacier-worn old volcano sitting almost on the equator, and the peak the country is named after. Trekkers walk to Point Lenana through forest, bamboo and a moorland of giant groundsels, while roped climbers go for the rock summits of Batian and Nelion above. Nanyuki, a relaxed market and garrison town right on the equator line, is the usual base, with the rhino and chimpanzee country of Ol Pejeta on its doorstep.

Why you'll love Mount Kenya (Nanyuki)

The trek  the walk to Point Lenana climbs through rainforest, bamboo, heather and alpine moorland of giant groundsels and lobelias before a pre-dawn scramble beside the glaciers.

Real summits  Batian and Nelion are multi-pitch rock climbs, which makes this one of the few great African mountains where the top demands a rope.

The quiet  a fraction of Kilimanjaro's traffic, so a high valley or a tarn can be yours alone for a morning.

Laikipia below  Nanyuki sits on the equator at the edge of ranch and conservancy country, where Ol Pejeta keeps black rhinos and a chimpanzee sanctuary.

When to avoid Mount Kenya (Nanyuki)

April is the heart of the long rains and the month to skip: forest trails turn to mud, the moorland bogs fill and cloud sits on the peaks for days. The short rains bring a second, lighter wet spell around October and November. In any month the high camps drop below freezing at night, and summit mornings are bitter.

Top things to do in Mount Kenya (Nanyuki)

  1. Point Lenana - the dawn trekking summit

    hiking scenic 👍 Popular

At 4,985 m, Lenana is the highest point you can reach without a rope. Summit day starts in the dark from Shipton's Camp or the Austrian Hut, with a steep final scramble that can be icy, timed so you reach the top as the sun lights Batian, Nelion and the shrinking Lewis Glacier.

  2. Sirimon up, Chogoria down - the classic traverse

    hiking scenic ⭐ Highly recommended

The route most guides would choose for you: up the drier Sirimon side through Old Moses and the Mackinder Valley, over Lenana, and down Chogoria past the Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson and the Hall Tarns. Five days or so, and you see two completely different faces of the mountain.

  3. Naro Moru Route - the Vertical Bog and the Teleki Valley

    hiking

The shortest and steepest approach from the west, notorious for the waterlogged tussock slope called the Vertical Bog, then up the Teleki Valley to Mackinder's Camp under the south face of the peaks. Often used to come down fast, and too quick for good acclimatisation as a way up.

  4. Summit Circuit - a high loop around the main peaks

    hiking adventure scenic

A day or two spent circling Batian and Nelion at high altitude, crossing cols and passing a string of glacial tarns, with every face of the mountain in view in turn. It needs an extra day of acclimatisation and good weather, and rewards both with the best scenery on the mountain.

  5. Batian and Nelion - roped climbs to the true summits

    climbing adventure

The twin rock summits are serious multi-pitch climbs at altitude, split by the Gate of the Mists. Nelion's normal route is the usual objective, climbed with a mountain guide and often with a night in the tiny hut on top; Batian's faces come into condition in opposite seasons as the sun swings north and south.

  6. Ol Pejeta Conservancy - rhinos and chimpanzees on the plains

    nature wildlife 👍 Popular

A big ranch-turned-conservancy just west of Nanyuki, with lion, elephant and one of the largest black rhino populations in East Africa against a backdrop of the mountain. It also runs a chimpanzee sanctuary, and it is where Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, died in 2018.

A little history of Mount Kenya (Nanyuki)

To the Kikuyu, the mountain is Kirinyaga, the seat of the god Ngai, and families traditionally built their homes with the doors facing it; the Embu and Meru farm its other slopes. The missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf reported a snow peak on the equator in 1849, and in 1899 Halford Mackinder's expedition reached the top of Batian with two alpine guides. The peaks still carry the names of Maasai laibons, and the glaciers and huts those of early climbers.

Settlers turned the plains around Nanyuki into ranches in the early twentieth century, and in 1943 three Italian prisoners of war broke out of the camp there, climbed to Point Lenana on improvised gear, and broke back in. The forests sheltered Mau Mau fighters during the Emergency of the 1950s, and Kenya, which takes its name from the mountain, became independent in 1963. The national park dates from 1949 and the World Heritage listing from 1997.

Timeline

1899

Halford Mackinder, Cesar Ollier and Joseph Brocherel make the first ascent of Batian, the highest summit.

1929

Eric Shipton and Percy Wyn-Harris make the first ascent of Nelion and the second of Batian.

1943

Three Italian prisoners of war escape from the Nanyuki camp, climb to Point Lenana and return to captivity.

1949

1952

1963

Kenya, named after the mountain, becomes independent.

1997

Mount Kenya National Park and Natural Forest is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

2013

The World Heritage site is extended north to take in Lewa and the Ngare Ndare Forest.

FAQs about Mount Kenya (Nanyuki)

▸ When is the best time to trek Mount Kenya?

The dry windows: January and February, then June into September, with January, February, June and July the most settled. April is deep in the long rains and the month to avoid, and October and November bring the short rains. The high camps freeze at night in every month.

▸ How many days does Point Lenana take?

Four to five days is sensible. Three-day dashes are sold, and they are a big reason the mountain has a reputation for altitude sickness: roads reach high gates and the ascent comes fast. A Sirimon-Chogoria traverse over five days gives the best acclimatisation and the best scenery.

▸ Do you need climbing experience?

Not for Point Lenana, which is a trek with a short, sometimes icy scramble at the top. Batian and Nelion are different: multi-pitch rock climbs at altitude that need rope skills and, for almost everyone, a mountain guide and a night high on the mountain.

▸ Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro is higher and walkable to its true summit. Mount Kenya is quieter, rockier and more varied, with tarns and valleys Kilimanjaro lacks, but its top two summits need a rope. Many trekkers rate Lenana the better walk, and some use it to acclimatise before Kilimanjaro.

▸ Is Mount Kenya expensive?

Usually less than a Kilimanjaro climb, because the trek is shorter and park entry is charged by the day. Costs rise with porters, a private guide, extra acclimatisation days and any conservancy time at Ol Pejeta or Lewa, which is where the bigger bills tend to come.

▸ Can you see the mountain from Nanyuki?

Yes, the peaks rise to the south-east of town, but not on demand. They are clearest at dawn, and cloud usually builds over the summit by late morning, sometimes clearing again around sunset.
