Taupo

A town on the shore of a lake that is really a supervolcano, with Huka Falls on the doorstep.

Taupo is a lakeside town at the northern tip of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, which fills the caldera of one of the most violent volcanoes on earth. The Waikato River leaves the lake here and thunders through Huka Falls just north of town, and the snowy peaks of Tongariro National Park line the southern horizon. People come for the lake, the trout, the geothermal ground and a run of adrenaline sports, and use the town as the base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

When to avoid Taupo

No bad season. June-August are cold and frosty, with short days and snow on the Tongariro peaks, and that is ski season on Ruapehu. The Alpine Crossing becomes a winter mountaineering route then, best done with a guide, and it can be cancelled in bad weather in any month.

Top things to do in Taupo

  1. Huka Falls - the Waikato in full flood

    scenic nature wildlife 👍 Popular

A footbridge crosses the narrow gorge where the river forces through a rock channel and drops into a churning pool. Walk there along the riverside track from the Spa Park end of town, or take a jet boat that noses up to the base of the falls.

  2. Tongariro Alpine Crossing - volcanic day walk

    hiking adventure ⭐ Highly recommended

A one-way alpine walk past the cone of Ngauruhoe, the Red Crater and the vivid Emerald Lakes, often called New Zealand's best day walk. Shuttles run from Taupo to the trailheads; it is a long, exposed day that needs proper gear and a settled forecast.

  3. Craters of the Moon - geothermal walkway

    nature wildlife scenic

A boardwalk loop through a steaming field of craters and vents that grew after the nearby power station lowered the water table. Hissing steam, mud and hardy plants, a few minutes' drive north of town.

  4. Mine Bay rock carvings - by boat on the lake

    culture arts scenic 👍 Popular

A huge face of the navigator Ngatoroirangi carved into the cliffs of Mine Bay in the late 1970s, reachable only from the water. Cruises, sailing boats and kayak trips from the harbour and Acacia Bay go out to see it.

  5. Skydiving over Lake Taupo

    adventure 👍 Popular

Taupo is one of the busiest tandem skydiving spots in the country, jumping from the airport south of town with the lake, the volcanoes and the whole central plateau below.

  6. Aratiatia Rapids - the dam release

    scenic

Downstream from Huka Falls the Waikato is held back by a dam, and at set times each day the gates open and a dry rocky gorge fills with roaring rapids within minutes. Watch from the lookouts beside the road.

  7. Spa Park hot stream - a free geothermal soak

wellness nature wildlife ⭐ Highly recommended

Where a hot stream tumbles into the cold Waikato just below town, people sit in the natural pools where the waters mix. Reached on the riverside walk towards Huka Falls; there are also commercial thermal pools in town.

  8. Trout fishing - the lake and the Tongariro River

    nature wildlife adventure

Lake Taupo and its rivers are world-known for wild rainbow and brown trout. Charter boats troll the lake from the harbour, and fly fishers head south to the Tongariro River near Turangi. A local fishing licence is needed.

  9. Great Lake Trail - ride above the western shore

    adventure scenic

A purpose-built mountain bike trail through bush and along cliffs above the lake's quiet western side, with sections suited to intermediate riders. Shuttles and bike hire in town make it easy to ride one-way.

  10. Mount Tauhara - climb the town's volcano

    hiking scenic

The dormant cone rising behind town has a steep track through farmland and forest to a summit looking across the whole lake to the Tongariro peaks. A solid half-day walk.

A little history of Taupo

Lake Taupo fills a caldera formed by the Oruanui eruption about 25,500 years ago, and around 1,800 years ago the Taupo volcano erupted again in one of the most violent eruptions of the last 5,000 years, blasting pumice and ash across the central North Island. The lake and its surrounds are the home of Ngati Tuwharetoa, who trace their descent to Ngatoroirangi, the navigator of the Arawa canoe, and who hold title to the lakebed today.

The town began as an armed constabulary post during the New Zealand Wars in 1869. In 1887 the paramount chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV gifted the sacred peaks of Tongariro to the nation, founding the country's first national park. The Wairakei geothermal station opened in the 1950s, and the trout, the lake and the road south turned Taupo into a holiday town.

FAQs about Taupo

▸ When is the best time to visit Taupo?

September to May is the most comfortable stretch, with long, mild days for the lake and the best conditions for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing from roughly December to March. June to August are cold and frosty but bring ski season on Ruapehu and quieter towns.

▸ Can you do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing from Taupo?

Yes. Shuttles run from Taupo to the start and pick you up at the far end, about an hour each way. It is a long, exposed alpine day, so check the mountain forecast; in winter it becomes a snow and ice route best done with a guide.

▸ Is Taupo or Rotorua better as a base?

They are about an hour apart and suit different trips. Taupo is the lake, trout, Huka Falls, adventure sports and the gateway to Tongariro; Rotorua is the stronger choice for Maori culture and big geothermal parks. Many travellers stay in both.

▸ Can you swim in Lake Taupo?

Yes. The water is clean and clear, and in summer people swim from the town beaches, Acacia Bay and Kinloch. It stays cool even in summer, and there are warm spots where hot springs enter the lake.

▸ Is the Taupo volcano still active?

Yes, it is classed as an active volcano and is monitored, but it has not erupted in around 1,800 years and everyday life in town carries on normally. The geothermal fields around Taupo are the visible sign of the heat below.
