Trincomalee

A cliff-top Shiva temple, a great natural harbour and calm beaches that shine when the rest of the island is wet.

Trincomalee is a Tamil port town on one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, on Sri Lanka's northeast coast. On the headland, the Koneswaram Temple sits high on Swami Rock above the sea, reached through the gates of the old colonial fort. North of town the long, calm beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli face the snorkelling reefs of Pigeon Island, and boats head out from the shore to look for whales. Its beach season runs through the middle of the year, when the south and west coasts are wet.

When to avoid Trincomalee

Late in the year is the one to skip: October to January brings the northeast monsoon to this coast, with heavy rain, rough seas and many beach guesthouses closed. February is a changeover month, and March to September is the settled beach season.

Top things to do in Trincomalee

  1. Koneswaram Temple - Shiva's temple on Swami Rock

culture arts history ⭐ Highly recommended

One of the island's most revered Hindu shrines, on the tip of the headland above a sheer drop to the sea. The Portuguese tore down the old temple in the 17th century; today's colourful rebuild draws pilgrims daily, and the evening puja is the time to go. Dress modestly and remove shoes.

  2. Pigeon Island National Park - snorkel the reef off Nilaveli

    diving nature wildlife 👍 Popular

A small marine national park a short boat ride off Nilaveli, with shallow coral, turtles and blacktip reef sharks cruising the edges. Go early, before the day-trip boats arrive, and stay off the coral in the shallows.

  3. Trincomalee whale watching - blue whales off the coast

    nature wildlife 👍 Popular

Deep water comes unusually close to shore here, so boats from Trincomalee and Uppuveli can reach blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins without a long run out. The season runs roughly from March to August; sightings are never guaranteed and early starts are the norm.

  4. Fort Frederick - the old fort on the headland

    history

Built by the Portuguese, taken by the Dutch and named by the British, the fort still guards the peninsula and is still an army base. You walk through its gates on the way to Koneswaram, past colonial buildings, old cannons and the spotted deer that graze inside the walls.

  5. Trincomalee dive sites - reefs and rock pinnacles

    diving 👍 Popular

Dive centres at Uppuveli and Nilaveli run boats to the reefs around Pigeon Island and the rocky sites off Swami Rock, with reef fish, turtles and the odd reef shark. Conditions are best from about April to September, and the shops close for the monsoon.

  6. Uppuveli and Nilaveli - long days on the beach

    nature wildlife ⭐ Highly recommended

Two long stretches of pale sand north of town, with calm, clear water through the season. Uppuveli is the livelier strip of guesthouses and beach restaurants; Nilaveli is quieter and wider. Fishermen still haul their nets up the beach in the mornings.

  7. Trincomalee War Cemetery - the harbour's Second World War

    history

A quiet, well-kept Commonwealth war cemetery on the road to Uppuveli, holding the graves of servicemen from the harbour's wartime years, including the 1942 Japanese air raid. A calm, moving half hour.

  8. Pathirakali Amman Kovil - the town's painted temple

    culture arts

A Hindu temple in the town centre dedicated to the goddess Kali, with a gopuram crowded with brightly painted figures and a richly decorated interior. It is easy to pair with a wander through the market and the fishing boats on Dutch Bay.

  9. Tamil east-coast cooking - crab curry and fresh fish

    food

The food leans Tamil: fiery crab curry, fish straight off the boats, string hoppers and dosa for breakfast, and kottu roti clattering on the griddle at night. Beach restaurants along Uppuveli grill the day's catch in the evenings.

A little history of Trincomalee

Trincomalee's harbour and its Shiva temple on Swami Rock have drawn sailors and pilgrims for well over a thousand years. Koneswaram is counted among the five ancient Ishwarams of Shiva on the island, and Tamil chronicles and poems praised it long before Europeans arrived.

The Portuguese pulled down the temple in the 1620s and used its stones for a fort on the headland. The Dutch, French and British all fought over the deep-water harbour after them, and the British made it a naval base that saw a Japanese air raid in 1942. The temple was rebuilt in the 20th century, and the town remains a mainly Tamil port.

FAQs about Trincomalee

▸ When is the best time to visit Trincomalee?

March to September, when the northeast coast is dry and the sea is calm, which is the opposite of the south and west coasts. October to January brings the northeast monsoon, with heavy rain and rough seas, and many beach places close. February is a changeover month.

▸ Uppuveli or Nilaveli: where should I stay?

Uppuveli is closer to town and has more guesthouses, dive centres and places to eat on the sand. Nilaveli is further north, quieter and wider, and it is where the boats to Pigeon Island leave from. Both are an easy tuk-tuk ride from each other.

▸ Can you see whales from Trincomalee?

Yes, in season, roughly March to August. The continental shelf drops away close to shore, so boats reach deep water quickly, and blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins are all possible. Sightings are never guaranteed, and trips start early in the morning.

▸ Is Trincomalee safe to visit?

Yes, it is a relaxed coastal town and normal care is enough. There is a visible military and naval presence: Fort Frederick is an active army base you walk through to reach Koneswaram, and some shoreline is controlled by the navy or air force. Do not photograph military sites or personnel, and follow signs at checkpoints.

▸ What should I wear to Koneswaram Temple?

Cover shoulders and knees, and take your shoes off before entering; there is a place to leave them at the entrance. The temple is an active place of worship, so keep your voice down during puja and ask before photographing people.

▸ How many days do you need in Trincomalee?

Three to five days is comfortable: a day for the fort, Koneswaram and town, a morning at Pigeon Island, an early whale-watching trip and time on the beach. Many visitors pair it with Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle, a few hours inland.
