Malmo was Danish for most of its history and still feels it: a flat, brick, herring-and-trade town at the bottom of Sweden, with Malmohus, the oldest surviving Renaissance castle in Scandinavia, sitting inside its moat at the edge of the old centre. Since the Oresund Bridge opened it has been half an hour from Copenhagen, which reoriented the whole city westward and turned the dead shipyards of Vastra Hamnen into a waterfront district under a twisting residential tower. It is the youngest and most immigrant-shaped city in Sweden, and the food, from the falafel stands around Mollevangstorget upwards, is the direct result.

When to avoid Malmo
This is the mildest corner of Sweden, which is a low bar; the dark months are grey, windy and wet off the sound rather than deeply cold, and the seafront, the beach and the terraces that make the city fun are all closed or pointless then. The long light of the warm months is when Malmo works, and even then the wind off the Oresund can take the edge off a warm afternoon. If the weather turns, the trains to Copenhagen and Lund run every few minutes regardless.

The practical airport is in another country. Trains leave the station under the terminal every ten to twenty minutes and run across the Oresund Bridge to Malmo Central in around twenty-five minutes, which makes it a transfer rather than a journey. Malmo's own airport at Sturup, thirty km east, handles a handful of domestic routes with a coach into town.

A little history of Malmo
Malmo grew in the Middle Ages on the herring that swarmed the Oresund, and it was Danish, at times the second city of Denmark. The crown built the fortress that became Malmohus in the 1530s, and the town's brick churches and squares date from that prosperity. Skane passed to Sweden with the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, after which Malmo spent a couple of centuries as a provincial border town facing the wrong way.
Industry turned it around: shipbuilding from the 1840s, then textiles and engineering, and by the 20th century a shipyard employing tens of thousands, with a gantry crane that was a city landmark until the yard closed and the crane was sold and shipped to Korea. The bridge to Copenhagen opened in 2000 and changed the city's geography, a university arrived, and the yard became Vastra Hamnen. It is now the youngest city in Sweden and the one with the largest share of residents born abroad.

▸ Is Malmo worth a stay of its own, or only as a Copenhagen add-on?
Both work. Two days is enough to do the city properly, and plenty of people use it as a cheaper base for Copenhagen and get a genuinely different city thrown in. Treating it purely as a dormitory sells it short.
▸ How do you get to Copenhagen from Malmo?
Trains run from Malmo Central over the bridge every ten to twenty minutes, taking about thirty-five minutes to the Danish capital and twenty-five to its airport. Bring a passport or national ID card, because identity checks are made on the crossing.
▸ Is Malmo safe?
The central districts visitors use are ordinary Nordic-city safe, and normal urban caution covers it. The city's reputation comes from gang violence that has been real and well publicised, but it is concentrated in specific circles and a few outlying estates rather than the areas people visit.
▸ What should you eat in Malmo?
Falafel, which the city does better than anywhere else in Sweden, from the counters around Mollevangstorget. Beyond that, Middle Eastern bakeries, Skane produce, and a modern Nordic restaurant scene that punches above the city's size.
▸ How many days do you need?
Two is right for the city itself. A third buys Lund, Ystad or the beaches at Falsterbo, all of which are short train or bus rides, or a full day across the bridge.
▸ Is it cheaper than Copenhagen?
Noticeably, on accommodation and eating out both, which is why so many visitors to the region sleep on this side of the sound. It is also cheaper than Stockholm, and a smaller city to get around.
