Arusha

Where the northern safari circuit starts, with an overlooked national park and a volcano to climb on the doorstep.

Arusha is the safari capital of northern Tanzania, a busy highland city at the foot of Mount Meru where nearly every trip to the Serengeti and the rest of the northern circuit is planned, packed and started. Most people pass through for a night either side of a game drive, but the city repays a little more: its own small national park on Meru's slopes, coffee villages in the foothills, and the market streets of a working East African town that is not dressed up for visitors.

Why you'll love Arusha

The safari start  every park on the northern circuit is organised from here, so a day in town is a day to meet your guide and get the trip right.

Mount Meru  Tanzania's second mountain rises straight behind the city, a broken crater rim you can climb in a few days with buffalo and giraffe on the lower slopes.

Arusha National Park  flamingo on the Momella lakes, colobus monkeys in the forest and walking safaris, all within an hour of town and far quieter than the big parks.

A real city  crowded markets, dala dalas and Maasai traders in town for the day give you East Africa as it lives, not as it poses.

When to avoid Arusha

No month is ruled out, but the long rains from March to May turn park tracks and Meru's trails muddy, with April usually the wettest and quietest. June to October is peak safari season and the lodges book out first. At this altitude evenings are cool from June to August, so bring a warm layer for early game drives.

Top things to do in Arusha

  1. Northern circuit safari - Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire from Arusha

    nature wildlife adventure 👍 Popular

Almost every northern Tanzania safari leaves Arusha by Land Cruiser in the morning, heading west to Tarangire, Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti plains. Meet your operator and guide in town before you commit, and give the circuit at least four or five days.

  2. Arusha National Park - Momella lakes, Ngurdoto Crater and walking safaris

nature wildlife scenic ⭐ Highly recommended

A compact park on Meru's eastern slopes: flamingo on the shallow Momella lakes, black-and-white colobus in the montane forest, giraffe and buffalo on open ground and the forested bowl of Ngurdoto Crater. There are no lions, so walking safaris with an armed ranger and canoeing on the lakes are allowed.

  3. Mount Meru - the crater rim to Socialist Peak

hiking adventure scenic ⭐ Highly recommended

A three or four day climb from Momella gate, through forest with a ranger on the lower slopes, then hut stays up to the narrow rim of a collapsed volcano. Summit morning walks the ridge to Socialist Peak with the ash cone below and Kilimanjaro floating above the cloud. Many climbers use it to acclimatise before Kilimanjaro.

  4. Clock Tower and Central Market - the middle of town

    culture arts shopping 👍 Popular

The Clock Tower roundabout is the landmark everyone gives directions from, and local lore calls it the midpoint between Cairo and Cape Town. A few blocks away the Central Market is a crush of produce, spices, kanga cloth and hardware stalls, best walked in the morning.

  5. Arusha Declaration Museum - Nyerere and the socialist turn

    history culture arts

A small museum by the monument roundabout telling the story of independence and the 1967 Arusha Declaration, when Julius Nyerere committed the new nation to Ujamaa socialism. Modest displays, but the clearest hour you can spend on how modern Tanzania came to be.

  6. Old German Boma - the Natural History Museum

    history

The whitewashed walls of the colonial-era German fort, around which the town grew, now hold a natural history museum with displays on the region's wildlife, insects and the early human finds from nearby Olduvai Gorge.

  7. Cultural Heritage Centre - carvings, Tingatinga and tanzanite

    shopping culture arts 👍 Popular

A sprawling gallery complex on the western road out of town, the usual stop on the way to the parks, with Makonde carvings, Tingatinga paintings, beadwork and a large tanzanite showroom. Expensive, but browsing is free and the art gallery is genuinely good.

  8. Meru foothill villages - coffee, waterfalls and cultural walks

culture arts food off beaten path

Villages on the lower slopes above town, Ng'iresi among them, run guided walks through Waarusha farms, banana groves and small waterfalls, with a stop to see coffee picked, roasted and pounded by hand. A good gentle day before or after a safari.

  9. Lake Duluti - a walk around the crater lake

    nature wildlife scenic

A small forest-ringed crater lake just east of the city, with a footpath around the shore, birdlife in the trees and canoes on the water. On a clear day Meru stands over the far side.

Getting to & around Arusha

Getting there

Fly into Kilimanjaro International, about an hour east of the city by road; light aircraft also use the small Arusha Airport on the western edge.

Flight

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

The terminal sits on the plain between Arusha and Moshi, roughly an hour's drive east of the city. Most visitors are met by their safari operator or lodge; airport taxis and shared shuttle vans also run into town. There is no train or public bus from the terminal.

Coach

Shuttle buses run down from Nairobi through the Namanga border crossing, about 5-6 hr including the border and the classic overland arrival from Kenya

Coach

Long-distance buses connect Dar es Salaam to Arusha, a long full day on the road, and shuttles run between Arusha and Moshi several times daily

Drive

The tarred highway runs east to Moshi in about 90 min and west towards Karatu and the Ngorongoro gate

Getting around

Safari vehicle

Your operator collects you from your hotel and does all the driving once a safari starts

TBC

Cash in Tanzanian shillings, handed to the dala dala conductor or agreed with a driver before you set off. There is no transit card; mobile money is common for larger bookings.

Taxi

The sensible choice after dark and for trips out to the suburbs; agree the fare before setting off

TBC

Dala dala

Shared minibuses on fixed routes through the city and out along the main roads, crowded and paid in cash

TBC

Boda boda

Motorbike taxis are the quickest way through traffic, though helmets are rarely offered

TBC

A little history of Arusha

Long before the town, Meru's fertile slopes were farmed by two peoples: the Waarusha, Maa-speaking cultivators on the south-western side, and the Meru on the east, with Maasai herders on the plains below. German colonial forces arrived at the end of the nineteenth century and built a fortified boma around 1900, and a small administrative and trading town grew up around it, serving settler coffee and wheat estates. Britain took the region during the First World War, and the railway from the coast reached Arusha at the end of the 1920s.

After Tanganyika's independence in 1961, Arusha gave its name to the country's defining political document: the 1967 Arusha Declaration, Julius Nyerere's commitment to Ujamaa socialism and self-reliance. The same year tanzanite was found in the hills to the south-east, still mined nowhere else. The opening of Kilimanjaro International turned the town into the base for the northern safari parks, and in 1999 it became headquarters of the East African Community.

FAQs about Arusha

▸ When is the best time to visit Arusha?

June to October is the long dry season and the peak for safaris, and January and February are a second good window. The long rains from March to May bring muddy park tracks and trails, with April usually the wettest. Arusha sits high, so evenings are cool from June to August.

▸ How many days should you spend in Arusha?

Most people spend a night before and after their safari, which is enough to meet the operator and see the centre. Add a day for Arusha National Park or the foothill villages, and three or four days if you are climbing Mount Meru.

▸ Arusha or Moshi?

Arusha for safaris: the northern circuit operators are based here and the roads to the parks head west from the city. Moshi for Kilimanjaro: it is the smaller, calmer town on the mountain's slopes where climbs are staged. They are about 90 min apart.

▸ Is Arusha safe for visitors?

Generally, with ordinary city care: watch your bag in the market and bus stand, and take a taxi rather than walking after dark. Street touts, known locally as flycatchers, push cheap safaris hard; book only with a registered operator you have checked.

▸ Can you see Kilimanjaro from Arusha?

Sometimes, on clear mornings from the eastern side of town and the road to the airport, though cloud usually hides it by midday. Mount Meru is the mountain that dominates the city itself, rising directly behind it to the north.

▸ When can you see the wildebeest calving?

The calving happens on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, usually from around late January into February, which falls in one of Arusha's good-weather windows. Safaris to see it leave from Arusha and need booking early.

▸ Is it safe to buy tanzanite in Arusha?

Arusha is the main market for the gem, mined only in the nearby Merelani Hills, but quality and honesty vary widely. Buy from an established dealer that issues a certificate, never from someone on the street, and treat it as a luxury purchase rather than an investment.

▸ Is a safari from Arusha expensive?

Northern Tanzania is one of the pricier safari regions in Africa, because park and crater fees are charged per person per day and lodges inside the parks are costly. Camping safaris and shared vehicles bring it down a lot.
