Fernando de Noronha

Brazil's protected island of spinner dolphins, clear water and the twin peaks of Dois Irmaos.

Fernando de Noronha is a small volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic, some 350 km off Brazil's northeast coast, most of it protected as a marine national park. Visitor numbers are controlled and building is limited, so the island keeps empty-feeling beaches, very clear warm water, resident spinner dolphins and nesting sea turtles. Baia do Sancho, reached down ladders through a cleft in the cliff, is regularly named among the best beaches in the world.

When to avoid Fernando de Noronha

No month is ruled out. Roughly March to May brings the heaviest rain and cloudier water for diving, though the north-shore surf still runs into March. The year-end holidays are the busiest and most expensive time, and the island is costly all year, with daily environmental and park fees on top.

Top things to do in Fernando de Noronha

  1. Baia do Sancho - ladders down to Brazil's most celebrated beach

scenic nature wildlife ⭐ Highly recommended

A curve of pale sand under high green cliffs, reached by steel ladders through a narrow gap in the rock. The water is calm and clear in the drier months, with turtles and reef fish a short swim from shore.

  2. Morro Dois Irmaos and Baia dos Porcos - the island's postcard view

    scenic 👍 Popular

The twin volcanic peaks rising from the sea are the image of Noronha. Look down on them from the clifftop above, then scramble over rocks to the small Baia dos Porcos, with tide pools beneath the peaks.

  3. Baia dos Golfinhos - spinner dolphins from the clifftop

    nature wildlife 👍 Popular

Spinner dolphins come into this sheltered bay to rest, often in large pods. Swimming there is not allowed; the viewpoint above is the place to watch them leaping and spinning, best early in the morning.

  4. Noronha diving - turtles, rays and reef sharks in clear water

diving nature wildlife ⭐ Highly recommended

Warm water and long visibility make this Brazil's top dive destination, with sites on both the sheltered inner sea and the open ocean side. Experienced divers can visit the wreck of the Ipiranga corvette.

  5. Praia do Sueste - snorkel with green turtles

    nature wildlife 👍 Popular

A sheltered bay on the ocean side where green turtles feed over the seagrass and small sharks are sometimes seen. Snorkelling is guided and regulated, which keeps the encounters calm.

  6. Atalaia - the island's natural pool

    nature wildlife scenic

A shallow rock pool on the ocean side that fills with reef fish at low tide. Visits are capped, timed and guided, and sunscreen is not allowed in the water, so book through the park system early.

  7. Cacimba do Padre - surf the north swell

    surfing adventure

When northern Atlantic swells arrive in the southern summer, Cacimba do Padre and the neighbouring beaches turn on powerful waves, and the island has long hosted professional surf contests. Outside that season the north shore is calm.

  8. Vila dos Remedios and its fort - the colonial heart

    history culture arts

The island's oldest village keeps an 18th-century church and the ruins of the Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, built when Portugal fortified the island. The fort walls look over the harbour and Praia do Cachorro.

  9. Projeto Tamar and Praia do Leao - the island's sea turtles

    nature wildlife

The turtle conservation project runs evening talks at its visitor centre in Boldro. Green turtles nest on Praia do Leao in the first half of the year, when the beach has restricted hours to protect the nests.

A little history of Fernando de Noronha

Sighted by a Portuguese expedition in 1503, the archipelago was granted the next year to the merchant Fernao de Loronha, whose name it still carries in altered form. Dutch and French forces each held it for a time before Portugal built a ring of forts in the 1700s, the largest above Vila dos Remedios.

For two centuries the island served mainly as a prison, later including political prisoners in the 1930s and 1940s, and during the Second World War it became a federal territory with a military garrison. In 1988 most of the archipelago became a marine national park and the islands returned to the state of Pernambuco. Together with Atol das Rocas it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

FAQs about Fernando de Noronha

▸ When is the best time to visit Fernando de Noronha?

June to January is the best stretch, drier and with the clearest water for snorkelling and diving. Surfers come for the north swells from about December to March. Roughly March to May is the rainiest period, and the year-end holidays are the busiest.

▸ Why is Fernando de Noronha so expensive?

Almost everything is shipped or flown in, accommodation is limited by law, and visitors pay a daily environmental preservation fee for every day of their stay plus a separate pass for the national park beaches and trails. Expect it to cost well above mainland Brazil.

▸ Can you swim with the dolphins?

No. The spinner dolphins rest in Baia dos Golfinhos, where swimming and boats are restricted. Watch them from the clifftop viewpoint early in the morning, or from the boat trips that run along the inner sea.

▸ Is Fernando de Noronha good for diving?

It is widely considered the best diving in Brazil, with warm, clear water, turtles, rays and reef sharks at sites for all levels. The wreck of the Ipiranga corvette is a deeper dive for experienced divers. Visibility is usually best in the drier months.

▸ How many days do you need?

Four to five days covers the main beaches, the dolphin viewpoint, a boat trip and some snorkelling. A week allows for diving, the guided trails and repeat visits to favourite beaches when the light and tides suit.
