Florianopolis

More than 40 beaches, a lagoon full of bars and some of Brazil's most consistent surf, all on one island.

The capital of Santa Catarina sits mostly on an island about 50 km long, ringed by more than 40 beaches and known across Brazil as the Ilha da Magia. At its heart, Lagoa da Conceicao is a lagoon backed by dunes and a bohemian village of bars. Around the coast are surf beaches, Azorean fishing villages farming oysters and the beach-club scene of Jurere, which makes the island southern Brazil's summer playground.

When to avoid Florianopolis

No month is one to avoid. Winter brings the most settled weather and the best surf, though the sea is cool and the beach towns quieten. Summer is the beach season, hot and humid, and late December through Carnival brings big crowds and long traffic jams on the island's few roads.

Top things to do in Florianopolis

  1. Lagoa da Conceicao - the lagoon and its village

    nightlife music food 👍 Popular

The brackish lagoon at the centre of the island is the hub of Floripa life, with seafood restaurants, bars and live music around the village by the bridge. Climb to the Mirante da Lagoa lookout on the road in for the view over water, dunes and hills.

  2. Joaquina - surf beach and sandboarding dunes

    adventure 👍 Popular

The island's best-known surf beach, with powerful waves off its rocky point. Behind it rise the big white dunes of Joaquina and the Lagoa, where boards are rented for sandboarding down the slopes.

  3. Lagoinha do Leste - hike to a wild beach

nature wildlife adventure ⭐ Highly recommended

A trail over the hills from Pantano do Sul in the south leads to a beach with no road access, backed by a small lagoon and Atlantic forest. A second, steeper path from Matadeiro goes over the top of Morro da Coroa.

  4. Santo Antonio de Lisboa and Ribeirao da Ilha - Azorean villages and oysters

    food history ⭐ Highly recommended

Two of the oldest settlements on the island, on the calm bay side, with colonial churches, Azorean houses and oyster farms just offshore. Eating fresh oysters on the waterfront while the sun sets over the mainland is the classic Floripa evening.

  5. Ilha do Campeche - boat to a protected island

    nature wildlife history 👍 Popular

A small island off Campeche beach with clear water, white sand and prehistoric rock carvings, protected as national heritage. Boats run from Campeche, Armacao and Barra da Lagoa, and visitor numbers are capped in summer.

  6. Costa da Lagoa - car-free fishing village

    nature wildlife food

A string of houses and seafood restaurants on the lagoon's far shore, reached only by boat from the Lagoa village or on foot along an old trail. A short walk up from the shore leads to a waterfall.

  7. Ponte Hercilio Luz and the Mercado Publico - the old centre

    history culture arts

The 1920s suspension bridge to the mainland is the city's symbol and is lit up at night. A short walk away, the yellow 19th-century Mercado Publico is packed with fish stalls and bars, next to the cathedral and Praca XV de Novembro.

  8. Jurere Internacional - beach clubs and parties

    nightlife music

A planned, upscale neighbourhood on the north shore whose calm beach is lined with beach clubs. In summer it hosts some of Brazil's most famous day-into-night parties.

  9. Fortaleza de Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa - colonial fort

    history

One of the 18th-century Portuguese forts built to guard the North Bay, restored on a headland above Praia do Forte near Jurere, with ramparts, cannons and wide views over the water.

A little history of Florianopolis

The island was home to Carijo Guarani people, and before them to shell-mound builders whose sambaquis and rock carvings survive. Portuguese settlers under Francisco Dias Velho founded Nossa Senhora do Desterro in the 1670s, and in the 1740s the crown fortified the bay and shipped in thousands of Azorean families, whose fishing villages, lace and folklore still shape the island's character.

After the Federalist Revolution of 1893-94, in which the city sided with the rebels, Desterro was renamed after President Floriano Peixoto, whose forces had retaken it. The Hercilio Luz bridge tied the island to the mainland in 1926. Tourism, a federal university and later a tech industry turned the quiet provincial capital into one of Brazil's most sought-after places to live.

FAQs about Florianopolis

▸ When is the best time to visit Florianopolis?

Winter has the most settled, comfortable weather and the best surf, though the sea is cool and some beach businesses close. Summer is the beach season proper: hot, humid and lively, with crowds and traffic peaking from late December through Carnival. Shoulder months mix the two.

▸ Where should I stay in Florianopolis?

Lagoa da Conceicao is the best all-round base, central to the east-coast beaches and the nightlife. Choose Barra da Lagoa or Campeche for surf and quiet, Jurere and the north for calm water and beach clubs, and Centro only for short city stays.

▸ Can you see whales from Florianopolis?

Southern right whales come to the Santa Catarina coast to calve in winter and spring. The best place to see them is south of the island around Garopaba and Praia do Rosa, where they often come close to shore and can be watched from the headlands.

▸ Do you need a car in Florianopolis?

Not strictly, since buses reach most beaches through the integration terminals, but they are slow and the island is large. A car or ride-hailing makes beach-hopping far easier; in high summer, traffic can make short distances take a long time either way.

▸ Why is Florianopolis called the Ilha da Magia?

The nickname, the Island of Magic, comes from the Azorean folk tales of witches and spells recorded on the island, most famously by the artist and folklorist Franklin Cascaes. Today it is used affectionately for the island as a whole.
