Cyprus

Nicosia

Europe's last divided capital, where a short walk through a checkpoint takes you from a Venetian bastion to a Gothic cathedral turned mosque.

Nicosia is the island's inland capital and Europe's last divided capital: a ring of Venetian walls with the Green Line, a UN buffer zone, running straight through the old town. Walk up Ledra Street, cross on foot with your passport, and the Gothic cathedral that became the Selimiye Mosque and the Ottoman caravanserais wait on the other side. Away from the beaches it is a working city of museums, coffee houses and the island's finest archaeology collection.

When to avoid Nicosia

No month is graded one to avoid, but June to September fall outside the best window: Nicosia sits inland on the plain with no sea breeze and gets the island's fiercest summer heat, so sightseeing shifts to early mornings and evenings. There is no beach, so pair a summer visit with the coast.

Top things to do in Nicosia

  1. Ledra Street crossing - walk across the Green Line

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The old town's main pedestrian street runs straight into the buffer zone, where a crossing point lets you walk through to the northern half of the walled city with your passport. It is the simplest way to grasp how the city was split, and the quickest route to the sights on the other side.

  2. Cyprus Museum - the island's archaeology

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The oldest and largest archaeological museum on the island, tracing Cyprus from the Neolithic to the Roman era. The highlights are the cross-shaped Chalcolithic idols and the massed terracotta figures from the sanctuary at Agia Irini, displayed as they were found.

  3. Selimiye Mosque - the Cathedral of Saint Sophia

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The Lusignan kings' French Gothic coronation cathedral, converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest, with two minarets added to its west front. Step inside to see the whitewashed Gothic nave turned towards Mecca, then look at the Bedesten, a church-turned-market beside it.

  4. Büyük Han - the Great Inn

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

A sixteenth-century Ottoman caravanserai built around a courtyard with a small mosque on stilts at its centre. Its two storeys of arcaded rooms now hold craft workshops and cafes, and it is the most atmospheric place in the city to stop for coffee.

  5. Venetian Walls and Famagusta Gate

    history

The sixteenth-century walls form an almost perfect circle with eleven arrow-shaped bastions, the moat below now parks and car parks. Famagusta Gate, the grandest of the three old gates, has a long vaulted passage that hosts exhibitions and concerts.

  6. St John's Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

A small, plain-fronted church whose interior is covered floor to ceiling in eighteenth-century frescoes, among the richest in the city. Next door, the Archbishop's Palace complex holds a Byzantine museum of icons.

  7. House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios - an Ottoman-era mansion

    history

The restored eighteenth-century home of a wealthy dragoman, the official interpreter between the Ottoman governor and the Greek community, with a timber-balconied upper floor and period rooms around a courtyard.

  8. Leventis Municipal Museum - the story of the city

    history

A compact museum in a restored house in Laiki Geitonia that walks through Nicosia's history from prehistory to the present, with costume, maps and everyday objects. A good first stop to make sense of the walls, the quarters and the Green Line.

  9. Meze and Cypriot coffee in the old town

    food

Settle into a long meze, a parade of small plates from halloumi and lountza to souvla and slow-cooked kleftiko, at an old town taverna. Daytime belongs to thick Cypriot coffee in a shaded courtyard; evenings to the bars around Faneromeni Square.

A little history of Nicosia

Nicosia grew from the ancient city-kingdom of Ledra and became the island's capital under Byzantine rule. Its golden age came after 1192, when the French Lusignan dynasty made it the seat of a crusader kingdom and filled it with Gothic churches. The Venetians, who took over in 1489, rebuilt its walls as a compact star-shaped fortress, but the Ottomans took the city in 1570 and turned its cathedrals into mosques.

Britain took over administration in 1878, and Nicosia became the capital of an independent Cyprus in 1960. After intercommunal fighting in 1963 a ceasefire line, the Green Line, was drawn through the city, and UN peacekeepers arrived the following year. Since 1974 the island has been divided, with Nicosia split down the middle; in 1983 a self-declared state was proclaimed in the north, recognised only by Turkey. Crossing points opened from 2003, and the Ledra Street crossing reconnected the old town's main street in 2008.

FAQs about Nicosia

▸ When is the best time to visit Nicosia?

October to May is the best window, with mild days that suit walking the old town; winter is cool rather than cold. June to September sit outside it: the capital is inland with no sea breeze and gets the island's hottest summer afternoons, so plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings.

▸ Can you cross the Green Line in Nicosia?

Yes. Several crossing points link the two halves of the city, including a pedestrian crossing at the top of Ledra Street in the old town. Carry your passport, expect a brief document check, and look at your own government's current travel advice before you go.

▸ Can I take a hire car into the north?

Many people do, using the vehicle crossings, but insurance from the southern side may not cover the north. Check your rental terms before you set off, and ask whether separate cover is needed at the crossing.

▸ How many days do you need in Nicosia?

Two days covers both halves of the old town and the main museums at an easy pace. Add a third to use the city as a base for a day in the Troodos Mountains or on the north coast.

▸ Is there a beach near Nicosia?

No, the capital sits on the inland Mesaoria plain. The nearest coast is roughly an hour away by car, at Larnaca to the south-east or Kyrenia to the north, so many visitors combine a city stay with a few days by the sea.
